Hino Gallery is pleased to present "Tadasu Yamamoto: A Field Activated by Photography" from Monday, May 25, 2026.

Tadasu Yamamoto (b. 1950) has long focused on "water" as a central theme, creating works that capture not only the natural elements associated with it, but also the invisible realms that surround them. The artist’s perspective—that he never simply captures his subjects as they are—is evident in his work; yet he also states that "photography is a reduction." By viewing the world, which can only capture concrete objects, as a kind of model and filtering it through his own concepts and imagination, he attempts to transform it into a broader, unknown field.

The latest works presented in this exhibition are a series of photographs taken in an industrial salt-handling district in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture—a place that has recently captured Yamamoto’s interest and to which he has been making frequent visits. At first glance, the landscape resembles snow-capped mountains or icebergs, but it is in fact an artificially created site formed by industrial salt imported from various countries. The artist states that he was deeply captivated by the scenery—which evokes nature—that has emerged from this environment, as well as by the way it changes form with each visit. Salt, a precious resource of the Earth, consists of tiny crystals gathered from all over the world to form masses resembling mountain ranges; as it is used for various purposes, it undergoes constant transformation. This framework is not unlike those found in nature or society, and in this sense it can be described as a condensed world; yet through the artist’s perspective, the site takes on a more distinctive character, transforming into a space that feels somehow cosmic.

The title of this exhibition, "A Field Activated by Photography," refers precisely to the sites viewers will perceive in the works—places that exist somewhere yet defy definition—and for the artist, they may represent the infinite spaces that can be created through the camera. This enigmatic realm is an exceptional field that can only be seen by those who, like the artist, possess an open perspective and a boundless imagination.

This marks Yamamoto’s first solo exhibition at Hino Gallery in eight years. His latest works from this series will be exhibited, and the installation, which makes extensive use of the gallery walls, is sure to transport viewers into a peculiar world.
