エルヴィーン・レーグル “for a space”Erwin Legl "for a space"

March 30, 2019 - April 20, 2019

Hino Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition entitled “For a Space” by Erwin Legl from Saturday, March 30th, 2019.

Erwin Legl is a sculptor who was born in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany in 1954. He started making sculpture, especially using wood, at a vocational technical school when he was a teenager. He then refined his practice further at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich where he gained a MA degree. He has had exhibitions and held workshops internationally in Japan, Denmark, Poland and Brazil as well as in Germany.

Legl’s works often seem to be created very freely: perhaps even randomly. However, his processes stem from the basics of molding, in which he was thoroughly trained during his student days. These fundamental skills, coupled with the associated knowledge and familiarity with materials and composition, have been manifested in the consistent transformation from three dimensions to two and vice versa. This rich grounding, fused with the artist’s aesthetic sensibility, yield Legl’s seemingly random but unique, pleasantly shaped works. He has no particular theme or fixed concept in his work and he organically develops the forms while handling the materials, seeking the right composition in each case.

One of Legl’s characteristic approaches is to “unify in white”. It makes the sculpture indefinable and accordingly it stimulates viewers’ imaginations. The bare white allows a sense of freedom to explore form and paradoxically a sense of intense dynamism co-exists with apparent calmness.

Legl exhibited his work at Hino gallery for the first time 5 years ago and this will be his second solo show. The first show consisted mainly of his bronze works but this time, a “white” exhibition, which is the artist’s signature style, and has been long awaited, will finally be realised. The exhibition title “for a space” literally means “space” and also represents “time” in the sense of, “for a while” and “longing” by further extension. Legl found consentience of aesthetic sensitivities when he first visited Japan many years ago. So, this time, how will his works be interpreted? We hope you will have a rewarding personal experience.

This exhibition is co-organized by Houkan Art Higashiyama in Nagoya and an exhibition entitled “and for a space” by Erwin Legl will start at the venue from Saturday, April 6th. Please try to visit the show in Nagoya as well.
