Ryoichi Kobayashi "Isolated Layers"

March 13, 2017 - April 01, 2017

Hino Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition entitled “Isolated Layers” by Ryoichi Kobayashi from Monday, March 13th, 2017.

In the 1990s when Ryoichi Kobayashi began to exhibit his work at the Hino Gallery, the theory of formalism in painting was re-evaluated and Kobayashi was one of the painters who was influenced by the mainstream. His paintings at that time were composed of color-field surfaces inhabited by silent strength and symbolic figures generated from inside of the canvases by applying paint a number of times. They have deep, quiet and some sort of scrupulous aspects. His use of a singular chosen color, such as red, green or beige, also testifies to how the artist emphasized forms at that time.

Kobayashi has not dramatically changed the process that he uses to create his paintings and still continues to use his multi-layered method of paint application. However, his recent works have been gradually changing to a new appearance. In terms of color, the artist uses a wider range, and the thickness of the surface on the canvas, a trait which appears in his earlier works, has been disappearing. His work has also become more animated.

The exhibition title “Isolated Layers” suggests a trigger for this transformation in his recent paintings. The more he paints color, the more the thickness on the surface increases, and it eventually detains the work itself. Then Kobayashi attempts to insert an objective and unrelated “isolated” color into the canvas. He physically adds the color to the painting, yet he describes the action as ‘erasing’ or ‘destroying’. It is as though he opens a crack in the painting to let new fresh air in and it starts breathing again. This daring action could provide a spark to break a certain seriousness that Kobayashi's paintings tend to have, and create an unfettered and dynamic sense of form. However, this approach wouldn't have been achieved without the artist’s serious vision that paintings can ultimately only be changed by paintings.

Kobayashi’s works will be showcased in the Hino Gallery for the first time in 2 years. We hope you will enjoy his most recent paintings which have taken on more free and vigorous forms.
